Me and a Box – Horizon Perdu

Me and a Box, a voice that conveys the intimacy of introspection, juxtaposed against a backdrop of infectious metronomic rhythms. Me and a Box’s sound blurs the boundaries between hot and cold, between the minimal and the intense. The utterly unique sound of Me and a Box, the true voice of Frenchwave that sits right at the heart of TONN.

Reka X Imperial Black Unit – Todo Avaricia

‘Todo Avaricia’ by Reka and the duo Imperial Black Unit is the result of an immediate and natural connection forged between the three artists, through a jam session that swiftly and intuitively yielded three tracks of stylistically diverse yet demonstrably cohesive sounds. Featuring the sampled voices of Che Cuevara, Pablo Neruda and original vocals by Reka herself, the EP plays the role of an urgent call to action against political and environmental injustice, conveyed via the musical substrate of new beat, industrial and EBM, fused into a landscape of techno and undeniably constructed for the dancefloor. The EP is rounded off with a heavy-hitting remix of the title track by the prolific Umwelt, in his signature dramatic style.

Larme Blanche ‎– Demain Est Mort

This is the first time in 6 years of Unknown Pleasures Records that I have signed an artist whose I don’t know true face and real identity. Following an exchange of daring and funny mails I wanted to know more, I did make adjustments on some tracks and the final mastering convinced me to publish this sonic UFO because I like the voice, the casual attitude looks like nothing, and I love his lucid and disillusioned lyrics, poetic and irreverent. I think we’ll all be very surprised the day we finally know the true identity of this guy. For now only his music is enough to make the time and space vibrate while waiting for the end of the world.

Clear Memory 003

With it’s third issue, Clear Memory is about to bring future good memories. Kicking off are tracks by Mr. Beef – who is a founding member of the crew and puts out a nasty anthem – and Hayter who is celebrating his solo debut reflecting his gastronomical preferences. We are yet again forcing our members to interact vigorously in order to form new groups such as Yarn Init & Stranded Wires who share not only the side of a record but also their sound aesthetics: sharp machine funk. A record to listen to as a whole. A walk in the park – a step in the dark. Don’t trip!

The Serfs ‎– Sounds Of Serfdom

As in medieval times, serfs seem to be everywhere in the new millennium. Unlike in medieval times, many of today’s serfs are Serfs, proper nouns with a musical mindset. You can’t swing 10 leaping lords without hitting a band called The Serfs these days. In our general area alone, there’s a Power Pop/Rock band out of Columbus, Ohio called The Serfs and there’s a Cincinnati Celtic Punk band christened The Serfs, although they appear inactive at the moment. But The Serfs being highlighted here seem to prefer mystery over publicity.

Sonically, The Serfs reveal themselves to be a powerful and evocative Coldwave outfit. They released a debut EP, Songs of Serfdom, early in 2019 and that six-song cassette has now been expanded to a full 11-track album and re-titled Sounds of Serfdom. The LP is being released on 12-inch vinyl through Berlin, Germany label Detriti Records.

The Serfs draw dark influence from a potent moment in ’70s Post Punk and New Wave, when synthesizers began to dominate the landscape and minimalism became the watchword of the day. It’s not hard to draw straight lines from The Serfs to giants of the cutting-edge synth movement of the late ’70s — Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, Tubeway Army, The Units and early Devo all surface in some form or fashion in the band’s sonic architecture. This would all be little more than genre window-dressing without good songs and the Serfs have that well covered, as their songwriting is as impressive as their apparent record collections.
