Cold New Haunts - Still Dark Sky

Darkwave solo gloom from Bristol, UK. Sometimes singing, sometimes shouting, always synths.

Still Dark Sky’s title track was written just before the UK went into lockdown for the first time – news of the approaching pandemic felt surreal and disturbing, but at the time everyday life remained unchanged. Each song that followed relates to a feeling or issue that has always existed, but which was inevitably amplified by the strange times in which it was born.

I wanted the songs to be cathartic – Still Dark Sky is my most upbeat and uncompromising album yet. You can dance to it. This album is here for anyone needs to process things via loud, heartfelt music.

Uncanny Valleys III

“Uncanny Valleys” compilation series is related to the theory introduced by japanese robotitian Mori Masahiro back in 1970, referring to the paradoxical perception of the existing similarities between robots and human beings.

This third opus focuses on Modern sonics, through a variety of genres and interpretations of these aesthetics. While the volume opens with a aerial and breaked track, it unfolds with ritual and ‘techno’ blending, before stepping into deconstructed territories with heavy vocal and digital manipulations. Finally, the final contributions open up sharply designed sounds and noisy atmospheres, which maintain the link within the compilation series.

Taking a look at music that is influenced by a genre – Industrial-, created in the times where the concept of Uncanny Valleys was created, helps us to grasp the links between the theory and art, both inspired by the development of technologies and its influences on both personal and societal aspects.

Clustersun - Avalanche

This is Psych. This is the kind of sound that will make you crave for being squashed in a massive crowd at a festival, eyes closed, ears exploding, mind tripping, legs dancing and head banging, lost and found, flooded by the fuzz, the reverb, the tune.

With their 3rd LP “Avalanche” CLUSTERSUN departs from dreamy shoegaze, reaching at high speed desertic and acid sideways. Dark and shiny, disturbing and glorious, straightforward and ambitious, it’s an album that will fit well in a playlist featuring The Black Angels, The Lucid Dream, The (early) Telescopes, Dead Skeletons.

The mix and mastering have been in charge of James Aparicio, a real scene’s guru, thanks to his work for Spiritualized, Mogwai, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave / Grinderman, Liars, The Cult Of Dom Keller, Dead Vibrations, Piatcions / Throw Down Bones, Rev Rev Rev.

Poladroid - Eurosiberie

What do you know about Russia? You think it’s just about vodka or caviar, roulette, cocktails or blinis… Bullshit!!! There is something, something you never knew about…

During the mid 70′s in the USSR, young Russians were listening to occidental and sovietic music. With the appearance of the punk, new wave and electro styles, a multitude of acts were formed. Due to the lack of instruments, young engineers decided to create their own synths, cloning, adapting and perfecting Japanese and American material, giving everyone the opportunity to create music with good quality instruments. From Moscow to Novsibirsk, From St Petersburg to Sochi, From Minsk to Norilsk, an incredible movement grew up. Between 1978 and 1986 about 40 LP’s were released, limited to 300 copies each. Their unique sound was never discovered in Europe.

After the fall of the soviet empire most of the tracks were lost but a few producers kept precious musical data. In 1999 a Russian immigrant living in Belgium, Vladimir Volkoff, found the data during a trip he made to Russia. He decided to reform the projects, using both old Russian analog prototype synths along with modern occidental technologies. [Discogs]
