The Ancestry is the new 4-track EP by Jemek Jemowit and a direct continuation of his video work The Poles of Berlin (31.05.2024–26.01.2026, BERLIN GLOBAL, Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin).

While the video features interviews with Berliners of Polish descent about their experiences with racism, Jemowit’s latest release tackles European racism more broadly and examines racist patterns in supposedly left-wing circles, such as the “White Savior Syndrome.” He also addresses the term “race,” which is enshrined in Germany’s Basic Law to protect people of different “races” but remains a taboo when used to describe individuals. This contradiction, coupled with his own experiences with active and passive racism and the growing shift to the political right in Germany, motivated Jemowit to create this project.

Mala Herba is a solo project of a sound artist and queer music activist Zosia Hołubowska. Based on traditional music, magic and demonology of Eastern Europe, Mala Herba explores queerness and sex-positivity. Powerful, witchy vocals are weaved into hypnotic beats, cold base lines and romantic synthesizer melodies. There’s something gothic and dramatic to it but nevertheless “this” makes you dance. Sometimes the melody cracks, the voice becomes a magic spell and the song transforms into a noise soundscape. But then the arppegio kicks back in and your bones resonate with the italo-disco inspired bass and rhythm.

The threatening sound of helicopter blades rotating, indistinguishable radio messages seeped in static, and the strains of a far-eastern melody open the new album by THE DEVIL AND THE UNIVERSE. Once the beat of the drums takes hold, you are reminded these sounds are being provided by the Viennese trio, who take us 50 years down memory lane with : ENDGAME 69 : Familiar electronic sounds, hard guitars and trance-evoking drums meet Indian and near-eastern vocal stylings—exotic drum and string instruments with such delightful names as the Tambur, Darabuka, Tablas, and Santurs. If, however, you think THE DEVIL AND THE UNIVERSE have now officially unearthed their inner trippy-hippies, think again.

The term “Satanic Panic” first emerged back in the year 1969. Most probably as a reaction to the radical social changes and crisis happening at the time. The occult worked its way into mainstream pop and social culture with the Manson Family Murders and the “Church of Satan” grabbing headlines. And also with “The Process” operating as a first ever public religious organisation which addresses satanic content within scripture.

What is happening to us?

Due partially to the growing resentment of the Vietnam War, an increase in drug intakes, revolutionary human rights movements such as the “Black Panthers”, the previously peaceful Hippy Revolution started to become more classically militant. When violence and murder were committed at the Altamont Rolling Stones concert, the Give Peace A Chance vibe from just a few months earlier at the infamous Hippy Convention also known as Woodstock, were definitely a thing of the past. What happened at Altamont was a forbearing for a decidedly not so lovey dovey future.

Turn Off, Tune Out, Drop Dead.

It has been a half a century since 1969 but the turbulence of those times can definitely be reflected in contemporary political and social climates. With all their sensitivities about past and present heightened, THE DEVIL AND THE UNIVERSE are staring deep into the dream machine and encouraging Kali’s tongue to indulge in sunshine acid.

As with past recordings, Ashley Dayour, David Pfister and Stefan Elsbacher travelled the continents to capture sounds only available beyond the confines of a classic studio. From the Californian Death Valley to the Hindu temples of Vietnamese jungles still ravaged by the violence of last century Napalm devastation. Also a chance encounter with underground filmmaker and magician Kenneth Anger leaves its trace on the new album.

Dune Messiah develops misanthropic persona on the new album Moments of Bliss. The Danish folk-noir artist Dune Messiah, unfolds a universe of black romance and mysticism. On March 29, he is publishing his second studio album “Moments of Bliss”, through French label Third Coming Records and German label Aufnahme + Wiedergabe.

Throughout the album we get to know a kind of isolated character express his bitter emotions and pity for humanity. A misanthrope who is outside the common society and sometimes with a sense of jealousy tries to reach out towards it. The character often finds himself hopelessly in love with a female figure, or in hateful envy and with a burning desire to destroy or degrade the female figure as a reaction to this. In the song Silence and Surrender, the man behind Dune Messiah, Magnus Westergaard sings: “They say that forgiveness is a way to be free, and Jesus told us all just to turn the other cheek, within silence and surrender, there has been a way of showing you the faces of the people you betrayed”.

The overall theme of the album thus deals with escapism and exclusion from society. An escapism that can also unfold in abuse of substances. Hence the inspiration for the song A Moment of Bliss, Westergaard explains: “The song’s lyric side has two themes; a cross-over of a state of deep meditation, seeking an inner peace, and a state of escape through heroin abuse, which can give the same sense of inner peace, but which eventually may lead to death. The title of the album Moments of Bliss, therefore also has an embedded ambiguity; a mystery that can also be reflected in the unfathomable smile of the misanthrope. The title is very much self-ironic i think”.
